RAINE, Herbert (1875-1951):

Chateau de Ramezay (rear view), Montreal, P.Q.

Etching and drypoint, printed on simile-japon paper before 1920. Signed and titled in pencil

A very fine impression with wide margins and deckle edges on two sides. A little pale foxing in the margins, otherwise in excellent condition. 233 x 194mm. Reproduced in “Old Montreal ”, 1921

This fine building was constructed in 1705 as the home of Montreal’s then governor Claude de Ramezay, and continued to serve this function for many years after the brief occupation by the Continental Congress Army in 1775-76.
Raine repeated this composition in a lithograph of unknown date. He also represented the chateau from the north-east corner, showing one of the turrets and the façade.
