CANALETTO (Antonio Canal, called) (1697-1768):

An Imaginary View of Padua

Etching, 1735-46. Bromberg 11, second state of three, one of 34 plates published under the title Vedute altre prese da i luoghi altre ideate in the 1740’s
Watermark: Three crescents
Provenance: Early P & D Colnaghi stock

A fine impression with small margins all round. These lightly mat-burned at the edges, otherwise in good condition.
305 x 437mm.

Bromberg speculates that this plate may have been done around the same time as the Imaginary View of Venice dated in the plate 1741. The first state is exceedingly rare, being cited in only two museum collections.
