SCULTORI, Diana (also called Ghisi, or Mantovana) (1547-1612, or c.1535 – ? 1588):

Latona giving Birth to Apollo and Diana on the Island of Delos, after Giulio Romano

Engraving. Bartsch XV, 39, first state of two before the address of Horatius Pacificus; Bellini 1991, 9, second state of six, before any address; Massari 9, first state of five
Watermark: Crest with three mounds
Provenance: Duplicate of the Albertina

A very fine impression, trimmed on or just outside the borderline all round (the dimensions greater than those given by Bellini). Several thin spots not affecting the recto, some pencil inscriptions and off-setting on the verso, the corner tips very slightly rounded, otherwise in very good condition. 260 x 383mm.

It is possible that, lacking any inscription or papal privilege, the print was done before Diana’s arrival in Rome in c. 1573, but the Minneapolis Institute of Art dates their impression to after 1575. Extremely rare, especially in early impressions.
