MECKENEM, Israhel van
(ca. 1440-1503):

St. John the Evangelist, after
The Master ES

Engraving, ca. 1470. Not in Geisberg, Lehrs, or Hollstein.
An unrecorded, probably unique print. Hand-coloured in green, brown, yellow and traces of red
A fine impression with polish marks and slight plate-tone, margins all round, narrower on the right. Creases in the upper right corner of the margin, a nick in the right edge, soft handling creases elsewhere, otherwise in very good condition. 126 x 82mm.

Van Meckenem’s shrewdness in supplying engravings that could be pasted into printed missals and other books as a substitute for the illuminated manuscript is remarked upon in “Painted Prints” (S. Dackerman, 2002, p.247). Because of the prototype they were often hand-painted.
