LEBAS, Jacques-Philippe

François-Charles Racot de Grandval, standing in an ornate garden, after Nicolas Lancret

Etching and engraving, 1755. Inventaire du Fonds Français 178

A very good impression with wide margins. A vertical centre crease, with very short repaired splits at either end, far from the image, a fox-mark on the face and pale scattered foxing visible on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. 472 x 574mm.

"One of the finest actors of his day" (Groves), De Grandval, descendant of a family of actors and the son of a composer, lived from 1710-48. This major print seamlessly integrates the full-length portrait into a detailed garden setting (which may, of course, be a stage set). The outdoor setting became one of the hallmarks of English portraiture, but a couple of decades later, and with a more informal presentation. No impression has appeared at auction in the last 25 years.
