In addition to the many caricatures Gavarni drew, his social commentary could be trenchant and sympathetic, as in the case of the weary magic lantern projectionist carrying his heavy burden home at the end of the day. Gavarni’s superb draughtsmanship and use of the rich, oily blacks available in lithography place him among the best mid-century practitioners of the medium.
