A Cleric attacked by three Men and a Dog

Original box-wood block for a wood-engraved illustration. The upper left corner chipped. 74 x 84mm.

Gustav Doré counts among the greatest illustrators of the 19th Century, as well as being a powerful painter and sculptor, as demonstrated by the exhibitions this year at the Grand Palais and National Gallery of Canada. Although he was a printmaker himself, it can be assumed that professional block-cutters produced his numerous illustrations for major works such as Dante, Shakespeare, Rabelais, Cervantes, Hugo, Balzac, Milton, Poe, and the Bible.
