CASTIGLIONE, Giovanni Benedetto (1609-c.1665):

The Feast of Pan, or Bacchanal before a Herm of Priapus

Etching, 1648. Bellini 10; Percy E8; TIB (commentary) .016 S3, third state of three with the address of G.G. Rossi (1627-91)
Watermark: Fleur-de-lis in double circle

A fine impression with many polish marks creating a pleasing tone, with thread margins all round. Two printing creases visible on the verso not affecting the recto, in very good condition. 228 x 185mm.

This charming subject captures the languorous, carefree existence among classical ruins that characterized the imaginary Arcadia to which Castiglione, like many other artists of his period, was drawn. Of his some 27 etchings, four are devoted to the god Pan.
